The lettering is obscured by lichen. The marker is exactly in line with the State of Michigan Historical Marker when looking north from down the hill near the woods. Sterling Hitchcock, Sr. and Charlotte Newsom b. 1801 NC were the parents of Reuben Hitchcock/Hathcock b. 1819 and Sterling Hitchcock b. 1823. Note: Sterling Hitchcock, Sr. b. 1792 or 1801 in Brunswick Co, VA and d. 1860. It is very possible the line of Sterling Hitchcock/Hathcock,Sr. goes back to Joseph Hathcock, 1700, Brunswick Co, VA. Sterling Hitchcock, the son, was born in North Carolina 1823 and died in 1882 or 1883. The surname spelling of Sterling Hitchcock had several versions. Surname documentation indicates Heathcutt, Hathcock, Hatchcock, Hathcox and Haithcock. Census Documentation: 1850-Ruscreek Logan, OH Heathcutt, Sterling 27, NC 1860-Taylor, Union, OH Hathcock, Sterling, 37, NC 1870-Calvin, Cass, MI, Hatchcock, Sterling, 46, OH 1880-Calvin, Cass, MI, Hathcox, Sterling, 55 engineer in sawmill, NC Civil War Pension Application - Surling Haithcock Sterling Hitchcock enlisted for the war on 15 Jan 1864 at the age of 40 and mustered out on 21 Sep 1865. Sterling Hitchcock/Hathcock was the third husband of Frances Allen b. 1 May 1831. Sterling and Frances were married 10 Jan 1869. Frances (Fanny) Allen was the daughter of Joseph Allen and Rebecca nee Tabourn Allen. Note: Frances Allen was previously married to #1: Carson Day 1848, #2: John Anderson 11 Mar 1849. All children of Frances were Anderson. One of those children was Helena Anderson, the paternal great grandmother of Maurice W. and Marshall H. Sanders, Jr. Sterling Hitchcock died in 1882 or 1883.
