ROSE, 88, former civic leader, a retired businessman and pioneer resident, died Monday at Charlevoix Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. Masonic funeral rites were held at the See Funeral Home Wednesday. Burial was at Brookside Cemetery. Mr. ROSE was born in Casco township, Allegan county, March 6, 1862 and came to northern Michigan in 1868. He was a barber by trade and operated a shop in Petoskey a short time before coming to Charlevoix. When he retired in December, 1943, he had been in business for 60 years. He was also a deep-sea diver as well as a Great Lakes sailor. He laid the first water main across Pine River in 1882 and also operated tugs and other vessels on the Great Lakes. He held his master's paper on the lakes. He was a village trustee and when Charlevoix was incorporated in 1905 he became the first alderman in the second ward. He served as mayor in 1908 and again from 1917 through 1921. He was also the city assessor and a member of the board of supervisors. He was active in fraternal orders and held memberships in the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges. He was also a member of the Blue lodge and has been a high priest in the Royal Arch Order and a member of the Knights Templar. He is survived by his wife, the former LIZZIE CAMPBELL whom he married at Elk Rapids Jan. 22, 1885; three grandsons, HAL, JACK and MASON who all reside in California and several great-grandchildren. His only son, MASON, preceded him in death. Additional Comments: ~ He was known as SAM ROSE and CAPT. S.M ROSE ~ His Parents: MASON F. ROSE and SIBBLE REED ~ His father died at the end of the Civil War when Sam was 3 years old. ~ His barber shop was next to the old swing bridge where Bridge Park now exists. ~ As a deep-water diver for 20 years, Sam wore the old bell helmets. ~ He raised and salvaged sunken ships (said by him to be most dangerous for a diver). ~ In 1893 he relaid a 24 inch pipe across the Chattahoochee River at Columbus, GA. ~ He installed a dam + an old Spanish water wheel at DeLeon Springs, FL. ~ Capt. S.M ROSE owned or was master of the following vessels: the schooner, KATE LYONS; the steamer, the ERIE L. HACKLEY; the fish tug, LILLIE CHAMBERS; the tug, BOB STEPEHNSON; the steamer ONEKEMA; the US bureau of fisheries cruiser, FULMAR, planting fry in Lake Michigan; and the steamer R.J. GORDON, ~ He was vice president in the Old Settlers Association of the Grand Traverse Region. Residences: 1862-1881 - Casco, Allegan Co, MI 1881..Petoskey, MI 1882-1887 .. East Jordan, MI 1887-1894..
