S.M. ROSE, 88, DIES FOLLOWING A LONG ILLNESS Mrs. ELIZABETH ROSE, 88, widow of S.M. ROSE, early civic leader and Charlevoix businessman, died in her sleep early Wednesday at the Melling nursing home in East Jordan where she had been a patient since October. The body was brought to the Pontius Chapel here to await funeral arrangements. Born in Alden, Michigan, Jan 6, 1867, the former ELIZABETH CAMPBELL, daughter of WILLIAM and ISABELLA CAMPBELL, was married to SIMON (SAM) M. ROSE at Elk Rapids on Jan. 22, 1885. They resided in Petoskey and East Jordan before coming to Charlevoix in 1894 to make their home. Mr. ROSE who died Sept 11, 1950, played a major role in the early history of Charlevoix. He laid the first water main across Pine River in 1882 and later served as second ward alderman and mayor. He was a barber by trade and retired seven years before his death. MRS. ROSE was a life member of the Charlevoix Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by three grandsons, HAL, JACK, and MASON ROSE, all of whom live in Los Angeles, Calif. area and several great-grandchildren. Her only son, MASON preceded her in death. Additional Comments: Known as lizzie, she was crankie, short, thin, tight curly hair, 105 lbs, 5' 3" tall, glasses, wore blue dresses according to a neighbor. He also said that Lizzie was a spiritualist who could levitate tables. Her grandson told me that everyone in town was afraid of her. She would go after storekeepers with an umbrella if her order was wrong. Her niece said that Lizzie once held off city officials and a construction crew with a shotgun because they wanted to run sidewalks past her house. She said Lizzie was quite a gal. She also said the she did not die in her sleep, but she choked to death.
