She had been in failing health for several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Barnard Methodist church with the Rev. Robert Moore of East Jordan and the Rev. Lloyd M. Schloop officiating. Burial was in the Barnard cemetery. Born in East Jordan March 12, 1884, the daughter of John R. and Jennie Schofield Vance, Vera May Vance taught in the rural schools of Charlevoix and Antrim counties prior to her marriage to Mr. Smith at Central Lake on Feb. 21, 1911. She had been a resident of Marion township for 44 years. She was a member of the Barnard Grange and president of the Barnard WSCS. She also had been the Charlevoix Courier correspondent in the Barnard district for 40 years. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Carlton H. and Clayton A. of Charlevoix; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Dorothy) Stoel, Mrs. Jasper (Mary) Warner, Mrs. Harley (Marjorie) Warner, all of Charlevoix, and Mrs. Charles (Helen) Smith of Alden; two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Clark of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Delita Fusch of Bellflower, Calif., and 20 grandchildren. ___________________________________________________________________ OBITUARY Courtesy Charlevoix Library 1963 Rites Held Tuesday for Clyde A. Smith Of Marion Township Clyde A. Smith, 79, retired Marion township farmer and pioneer lumberman, died unexpectedly at his home late Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Winchester Funeral Home Tuesday with the Rev. Harold Cox of the East Jordan Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Barnard cemetery. Born in Marion township Dec. 14, 1884, Mr. Smith was married to the former Vera M. Vance at Central Lake on Feb. 21, 1911. They always made their home on a farm in Marion township. Mrs. Smith preceded him in death Sept. 18, 1955. Mr. Smith was one of the few remaining lumbermen who had worked in the lumber camps in the northern Michigan counties during the lumbering era in early years of the century. He was sexton at the Barnard cemetery for more than 20 years and was a former member of the Barnard Grange and Farm Bureau. He attended the Barnard Methodist church. Surviving are two sons, Carlton H. and Clayton A. of Charlevoix; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Dorothy) Stoel, Mrs. Jasper (Mary) Warner and Mrs.Harley (Margery) Warner of Charlevoix and Mrs. Charles (Helen) Smith of Alden; 23 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; a brother, Frank Smith of Charlevoix and two sisters, Mrs. William Ritter of Ferndale and Mrs. Philip Frankie of Detroit.
