Rev. Albert F. Mansen will officiate and burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Mr. Black, a retired rural mail carrier, has been in failing health for more than a year. He was born in Charlevoix May 19, 1899. He married the former Mary Gates in October, 1923 at Kalkaska and they always resided in Marion township. Mr. Black retired as a rural mail carrier after 37 years and was a member of the rural letter carrier’s association. He operated a farm in Marion township and was well known throughout Michigan for fine horses which he raised and entered in horse pulling contests held throughout the state.He was a member of the Community Reform Church and a World War I cavalry veteran. Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Jean) Drenth and Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Drenth, both of Ellsworth, Mrs. Edward (Shirley) Wilbur, of Kalamazoo and Mrs. Richard (Mary Lou) Johnson, of Elmhurst, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Felix and Mrs. John Johnson, both of Charlevoix. The family requests that anyone wishing to honor the memory of Mr. Black may contribute to the Cancer Society in his name. ________________________________________________ OBITUARY Mary V. Black Mary Viola Black. 98, of Charlevoix, died Jan. 16, 1996. at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Her funeral was Friday. Jan 19, at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. The Rev. Bruce E. Hamilton of the Community Church of God and pastor William Lyons of the Ellsworth Wesleyan Church officiated. Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix. Mrs. Black was born Dec. 23, 1897, in Alba, the daughter of Burt and Eldora (Tupper) Gates. She was raised in the Gaylord/Alba area, then moved to Charlevoix where she worked at the Chicago Club. On Oct. 6. 1923, she married Floyd Black in Kalkaska. He preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1968. Mrs. Black attended the Community Church of God in Charlevoix, and in later years the Ellsworth Wesleyan Church. She was a member of the Marion Center Grange, and had taught sewing and 4-H. Mrs. Black enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, and especially her children and grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters. Jean Drenth of Ellsworth. Mary Lou Johnson and her husband, Richard, of Elmhurst. III., and Shirley Ann Wilbur and her husband. Ed. of Kalamazoo; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one sister. Gladys Garshow, of LaPorte, Ind. Mrs. Black was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Bob Drenth; and by two grandsons, Eddie Wilbur and Jeff Drenth. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Ellsworth Wesleyan Church or to the Community Church of God in Charlevoix.
