He had suffered a stroke following a major operation at a Kalamazoo hospital, and died there Jan. 10. Born August 7, 1871, in Newaygo county, Mr. Cole was engaged in lumbering in northern Michigan for half a century. As a young man, he ran a lumber and shingle mill at Bellaire. He went to Beaver Island in 1910, bought out the Switzer lumber mill, and conducted that business until about ten years ago. For a few years he owned a small freight boat operating on Lake Michigan. Of recent years he had developed considerable resort property on Beaver Island, consisting of cabins and building sites. Mr. Cole married Julia Seaman at Big Rapids on November 21, 1893. For the past five years the Coles had spent winters in Kalamazoo with their daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Stevens. Surviving besides the wife are a son, Jesse, of Waterbury, Conn.; five daughters, Mrs. Caroline Jensen, Mrs. Mattie Ludecke, Mrs. Garnet Green, of Chicago; Mrs. Wilma Naylor, of Provo, Utah, and Mrs. Marguerite Stevens, of Kalamazoo; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Beck, of Greenville, Mich., and Mrs. Jennie Barnes, of Chisholm, Minn. Two sons and a daughter preceded him in death. Services were held in Kalamazoo on Monday evening of last week, at the Weissner-Feyen Funeral Home. Rev. Leigh H. Hagle conducted services at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the See Funeral Home in this city. Interment was at Brookside cemetery. ______________________________________________________________________ Julia's Obituary Charlevoix Courier October 29, 1947 Mrs. Julia Cole Rites Held Wednesday Mrs. Julia Cole, 71, widow of Garrett Cole, pioneer lumberman of northern Michigan, died Monday at the Charlevoix Hospital where she had been a patient for several days. She had gone to Chicago on Oct. 5 to spend the winter with her daughters and was flown home last week when she became ill shortly after her arrival. Born in Big Rapids on June 12, 1875, Julia A. Seaman was married to Mr. Cole in Sept. 1892. They lived in lumbering centers throughout the state and were at Bellaire for several years before going to Beaver Island about 35 years ago. He operated a lumber and shingle mill there until his death in Jan. 1942. Since then Mrs. Cole has spent the summer months on Beaver Island and the winters in Charlevoix and Chicago. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Caroline Jensen of Lombard, Ill.; Mrs. Mattic Ludeke and Mrs. Garnet Green of Chicago, and Mrs. Marguerite Stevens of Detroit ,and one son, Jesse of Detroit; four brothers, Ralph of Saginaw, Fred of Alden, Edward of East Jordan and Oren of Barryton; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the See Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. W. D. Wood officiating. Burial was in the Brookside cemetery.
