Mr. Hughes was bom in Montrose, Scotland, May 18, 1818, and passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Cooper in this city, where he had made his home for the past 20 years. Previous to that time he had lived with the family of Richard Cooper for about 26 years. In his youth Mr. Hughes was a salt water sailor and had visited many foreign countries. His tales of his experiences on the seas in foreign climes were very interesting, and at the beginning of the German war he was anxious to have the papers read to him, recognizing many of the places mentioned as having been visited by him during his sea-faring days. The funeral services were conducted at the residence of H. C. Cooper, Saturday afternoon at three o'clock, by Rev. C. E. Taggart, who used the Episcopal burial service, and read from the chapters he found marked in Mr. Hughes' old bible. Interment was at Brookside cemetery, the casket being lowered into the grave just at the setting of the sun, a fitting tribute and a most appropriate closing for the life of this grand old man.
