MATHILDA JERICHOW Lived on a Farm in Hayes Township for Past Twenty-four Years Funeral Monday Another of Charlevoix's early settlers, Mrs. Mathilda Jerichow, died at her home near Burgess, Hayes township, last Friday, March 9th, at 11:00 p. m. She was 75 years of age and suffered from cancer of the liver, for which she was operated upon about two years ago, but without success. Mathilda Crull was born in Germany, March 6, 1842. She came to this country in the spring of 1868 and located in Wisconsin, from whence she came 24 years ago and settled on the farm in Hayes township, where she has lived with her son, Herman, since the death of her husband, Gustav Jerichow, who died in the spring of 1909. Mrs. Jerichow leaves six children; three sons and three daughters, Gustav, Charles and Herman of Hayes, Mrs. Loren Hamlin of Hayes, Mrs. Emma Petoskey of Petoskey and Mrs. Alma Mock of Detroit. There are also four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was a member of the German Lutheran church. The funeral took place at the home of the deceased Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock, Rev. Lloyd C. Vinyard, officiating. The body was taken to Brookside and placed in the receiving vault. Regretfully, we watch the passing of a generation of pioneers, one by one like the falling leaves of autumn. Words can but feebly express the debt of gratitude that we of this day owe to those hardy, optimistic and courageous souls who braved the discomforts, dangers and hardships of a new country that we who were to follow might live in peace, plenty and prosperity. May their descendant lack no portion of that far-sighted faith and dauntless courage which has made our state one of the greatest in the Union.
