Mayne 1852 - 1944 Charlotte Ainslie was born Mar. 10, 1852 at Oakland County, Michigan, USA Charlotte Ainslie married married Frederick W. Mayne in 1882, who was circuit court judge in the 13th Judicial Circuit for twenty-five years. He preceded her in death in 1924. Charlotte Ainslie Mayne died Jul. 19, 1944, at Cheboygan, Cheboygan County, Michigan. OBITUARY Courtesy Charlevoix Library Charlevoix Courier MRS. MAYNE DIES AT 92, LIVED HERE SINCE CIVIL WAR Mrs. Charlotte A. Mayne. 92, pioneer resident of Charlevoix and widow of the late Judge Frederick 1 W. Mayne, died at the home of her son, Dr. F. C. Mayne, in Cheboygan late Wednesday evening. Mrs. Mayne made her home in Charlevoix until recent years. She had been in failing health for several years. Charlotte Ainslie was born in Oakland county, Michigan, on March 10. 1852. As a young girl she came to Grand Traverse county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Ainslee, following the close of the Civil War. After a short time there they settled in Charlevoix, then known as Pine River. At that time they were one of the few white families in the community. Her father and uncle, Gilbert Ainslee, held the mail contract for north Michigan and carried the mail from Traverse City to Cheboygan by pony and Indian runner with Charlevoix as a half way stop. Later when a state road was opened between between Traverse City and Charlevoix, she was the first white woman to ride over it. She received her education at Monroe and at the age of 16 was one of the first teachers in Petoskey when it was still known as Bear Creek. She later taught school in Charlevoix. Mrs. Mayne remained a student all her days, her great grief being when many years of life caused failing eyesight and prevented her following the ever present urge to acquire knowledge, her mental faculties being unimpaired. Through her many experiences in her early days she has passed on many colorful stories of the Indians in northern Michigan and In 1882 she married Frederick W. Mayne, who was circuit court judge in the 13th Judicial Circuit for twenty-five years. He preceded her in death in 1924. Mrs. Mayne was a member of the Episcopal church and was active in the church Guild. She was a charter member of the Shakespeare Club which was organized in 1906. Surviving are two sons. Dr. F. C. Mayne, of Cheboygan, and John A. Mayne, of Pasadena, Cal.; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Stacks, of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Harvey Savage of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Lewis, of Pasadena, and Mrs. Frank Kenyon, of Charlevoix; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One child preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the Sec Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. John Payne, of the St. James Episcopal church, Cheboygan, officiated.
