Peter 1871-1955 1858-1934 OBITUARY Mrs. Mary McFarland Lifelong Resident, Passes In Ferndale Mrs. Mary McFarland, 84, lifelong resident of this community, died unexpectedly late Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gerald Lowing, in Ferndale where she had gone two weeks ago to spend the winter. Funeral services will be held at the Pontius Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. W. N. Carr officiating. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery. The former Mary Smith was born in Marion township Nov. 10, 1870, the daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Smith. She was married to Peter McFarland in 1886. He preceded her in death in 1935. In March, 1943, Mrs. McFarland made a trip to New York to appear on Gabriel Heater's program, '"We the People", to tell the story of the Battle of Pine River fought here on July 13,. 1852 between the Mormons of I Beaver Island and the local fishermen as told to her by her uncle Stephen Smith, who as a child had witnessed the historic battle. She was a member of the Baptist church.
