Nowland Date Of Photograph: July 9, 2009 Photo can be seen at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/charlevoix/photos/tombstones/brookside/nowland179806gph.jpg Image file size: 96.9 Kb Nowland Thomas E. 1857-1934 Johan M. 1863-1940 FUNERAL MONDAY FOR THOMAS NOWLAND, 77 Was Well Known Marine Engineer and Former Local Resident Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from Brookside chapel for Thomas Nowland, age 77, who died Saturday morning at his home in Echo township, Antrim county. Rev. W. W. Hurd officiated at the services and interment was at Brookside. Prior to taking up his home in Antrim county about 12 years ago, Mr. Nowland had been a resident of this city upwards of 40 years. He was a marine engineer and held this position on the steamer “Hum” and many other craft operating out of this port. Surviving are three daughters. OBITUARY Thomas Erastus Nowland passed away at his farm home seven miles from East Jordan, Saturday, April 14, at 6:30 a. m. from lobar pneumonia. He was born April 5, 1857, at Flat Rock, Wayne county, Mich., and came to Charlevoix with his parents at the age of nine years. He was a marine engineer from the age of 21 until he retired ten years ago. He was united in marriage February 7, 1883, to Miss Johan McMillan of East Jordan, who, with three daughters and a nephew he raised, survive. Mrs. Grace Cobb, Grand Rapids, Mrs. Janet Dorrance, Mackinaw City, Mrs. Alba Countryman, East Jordan, and David Nowland at home. A son, Thomas R., preceded him in death fifteen years ago. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Jane Root of Oregon, and a brother, Abraham, to whose home the body was taken, where prayer was held Monday afternoon at 1:30, and services at 2:00 in the chapel. Burial in the family lot at Brookside cemetery. Additional Comments: MRS. THOMAS NOWLAND BURIED HERE THURSDAY Former Local Woman Died November 26 Near Central Lake Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the See Funeral Home by Rev. W. L. Cruthers for Mrs. Thomas Nowland, former local resident, who died November 26. Mrs. Nowland, age 77, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dell Countryman, where she had resided since leaving Charlevoix many years ago. Burial was at Brookside cemetery.
