Myrtle C. 1868-1919 1882-1919 OBITUARIES Charlevoix Courier February 12,1919 INFLUENZA TAKES WM. E. NOWLAND Death claimed one of Charlevoix's oldest residents Tuesday when William E. Nowland passed away at his home on Hurlbut Avenue, following a few days illness of influenza. Deceased was born November 17, 1868 in Charlevoix and has made his home here during his entire life. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Isaman of East Jordan, September 26, 1905. To this union three children were born, two boys, age twelve and four and one girl age seven. For several years Mr. Nowland was overseer on the Belvedere resort grounds but for a short time before his death had been working near Ellsworth. He was taken ill February 3, but kept at his work until last Friday when he had to give up and come home. He passed away at five O'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was a kind and loving husband and father, of a charitable nature, always ready to help those in need. He will be sadly missed by his family, and his children are just at the right age to need a kind father's hand to guide them. He is survived by his wife, three children, three brothers, Abe Nowland, of Charlevoix, Amos Nowland of Rudyard and Tom of Echo, three sisters, Mrs. John Ward of this city, and Mrs. Charles Root of Portland, Oregon. Private funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 o'clock from the residence on Hurlbut Avenue. Rev. Candler officiating. Interment in Brookside cemetery. ________________________________________________________________ Charlevoix Courier February 19, 1919 DEATH AGAIN ENTERS HOME FATHER CALLED FIRST, THEN THE MOTHER Deadly Ravages of Spanish Influenza Takes Mr. and Mrs. William Nowland—Case Pathetic One The deadly ravages of influenza was never so fully realized in this city until the death of Mrs. Will Nowland, which occurred Monday at midnight, just six days after the death of her husband. Mr. Nowland died on Tuesday night of last week and funeral services were held from the house Thursday. During the afternoon of the day of the funeral, Mrs. Nowland put the house in condition for fumigation, and with her children and sister, went to the home of Richard Lewis to stay overnight. She complained of feeling ill about five o'clock in the afternoon. At nine o'clock she was that ill that it was necessary to carry her to her room. By morning she was in serious condition and lingered along until death relieved her of her suffering at midnight Monday. Myrtle Isaman was born in East Jordan, August 1881, and lived there until her marriage to William Nowland. September 26, 1905, when they moved to Charlevoix, where they have since made their home.. She leaves three children and five sisters, besides a host of friends who will miss her as a neighbor and companion. Private funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 from the Lewis home on Clinton street, Rev. Henry Candler of the M. E. church officiating.
