SLOAN TAKEN BY DEATH PROMINENT IN BUSINESS AND CIVIC AFFAIRS County Red Cross Treasurer for 25 Years; Was Authority on Abstracts and Titles Mrs. R. F. Sloan, prominent in business and civic affairs in Charlevoix for many years, died Tuesday evening at Charlevoix Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage on November 17, she had rallied only slightly since that time. Born December 15, 1888, at Ironton, Isabel Mitchell was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell. She was married to Robert F. Sloan in Charlevoix on September 24, 1927. Chief bookkeeper for the Charlevoix Sugar Beet Co. when that firm was in operation here, she was employed by the company in Ottawa, Ohio, for some time. In 1916 she entered the employ of the Charlevoix Abstract & Engineering Co., operated by Mr. Sloan. In that year she organized the Charlevoix Insurance Agency, which was sold last week to Robt. Bridge and Elmer D. Hawley, after 27 years of operation as a copartnership by Mr. and Mrs. Sloan. Recognized as an authority on abstract and title matters by the National Abstract & Title Association, Mrs. Sloan was also active in the Michigan Title Association. Since this country's participation in the first World War, she had been a loyal and industrious worker in the Charlevoix county Red Cross. She was county Red Cross treasurer from about 1917 until shortly after the United States entered the present war; member of the board of directors for three years, and home service chairman for the city of Charlevoix until her illness. In addition to these administrative duties, she had organized local citizens for the blood donors clinic held in this J | county in November, and was a' faithful worker in the making of Red Cross knitted garments and surgrical dressings. Mrs. Sloan was treasurer of the Congregational church for 10 years, and active in affairs of the church. Surviving are her husband, two brothers, Dr. W. W. Mitchell, of Miami, Fla., and John Mitchell, of Boyne City; three sisters, Mrs. E. H. Coleman, of Hastings, Mrs. Charles H. Wilson, of Almont, and Mrs. Roy S. Swinton, who is in a j Japanese concentration camp at Manila, P. I.
