STEPHEN SMITH DIES AT SIXTY-EIGHT Was Daughter of Charlevoix's First Jeweler, S. S. Liscomb Friends and neighbors of Mrs. Stephen H. Smith, of 401 Antrim street, were deeply shocked and grieved to learn of her sudden passing from this life on Saturday of last week, September 14th. She was a woman of fine Christian character, a kindly soul much beloved by all who knew her. A heart affliction of long standing was the cause of her death. Hattie V. Liscomb was born in Iowa, February 13, 1861, came to Michigan at about the age of three years and moved to Charlevoix with her parents in 1869. Her father, Sylvester S. Liscomb, was the first jeweller to open a shop in Charlevoix. On the 59th of November, 1877, she was married to Stephen H. Smith of this city and the couple had made their home here continuously since that time, with the exception of two and a half years spent in Detroit and a year in Durand. Four children were born to this union. The oldest, a daughter, Mrs. Otto Powers of Muskegon, died last February at the age of 50 and was brought to this city for interment. The second child, a daughter, died at the age of 21 months, of diptheria. The third child, a son, died at the iage of 23. She is survived by her husband and her youngest child, now the wife of Arthur Staley of this city; also two sisters, Mrs. Etta Hanshew of Charlevoix and Mrs. A. D. Goddard of Healdsburg, Calif. The funeral was held from the home of the deceased on Monday afternoon at two o'clock. Mrs. Smith was an ardent Christian Scientist and the funeral service was conducted by Dr. Frank H. Wilkinson, a member of that communion. Many beautiful floral gifts attested the esteem and affection which the many friends of the deceased felt for her. Out-of-town relatives and friends that attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Valeaux, Detroit; Justin Hanshew, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Ward Bennett and son, Kentner, Grand Haven; Carl and Mary Powers, Muskegon; Mrs. Ida M. Pulcipher, daughter, Bernice, and a granddaughter, Traverse City, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith and daughter, Bertha, Bellaire.
