Minert married Rachel Jean Whitley in 1935 at Charlevoix, Michigan. Additional Comments: OBITUARY Courtesy Charlevoix Library Charlevoix Courier Minert "Mike" Veenstra: Jan. 21, 1919 - April 8, 2008 Minert "Mike" Veenstra, 89, resident of Charlevoix, passed away on April 8 at Sunnybank in Charlevoix. Funeral services were held April 11 at the Charlevoix Community Church of God. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 10 at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. The Reverends Neil Turner of Community Church of God and Chip Sauer of the Community Reformed Church officiated. Burial followed the service at Brookside Cemetery. Mike was born on January 21,1919 in Atwood to John and Minnie Veenstra. He married Rachel Whitley of Charlevoix in 1935. The couple lived in Charlevoix and later Ellsworth for a time and back to Charlevoix in 1962. Mike served as a Sergeant in the US Army from 1944 through 1946. He was a farmer and retired as a mechanic from Medusa Cement after 18 years of employment He was a member of Community Church of God, serving in the past as board member, Sunday School teacher, actively caring for the Church of God Campground and through all the years was a greeter at Sunday morning services. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Rachel, his wife of 66 years in 2001. Survivors include two sons, Minert "Mick" and Kathy of South Lyon, Allen and Nancy of Jonesville, and one daughter Myrna and Ken Boss of Charlevoix. He cherished and loved his seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Johanna Doctor of Ellsworth. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gezina Aardema and Christine DeVries and one brother, John Tornga. Memorials are suggested to be sent to Charlevoix Area Hospital or Church of God Campground.
