Ward Is to Be Regretted By Friends and Relatives Edward B . Ward, president of the Charlevoix association of Commerce, for years prominent in all civic affairs and one of the county's most respected citizens, died suddenly about one o'clock Thursday, after an illness of less than three days. Monday evening upon reaching his home he complained of severe pains in his right side, but paid little attention to his condition. Tuesday he was unable to resume his daily duties and remained at home during the day. Wednesday his condition remained unchanged and during the early part of Thursday, he was hardly able to move about the house. At noon Thursday friends from out of town were guests at dinner, but Mr. Ward did not join them at the table. Just at the close of the meal, his wife heard the sudden clapping of hands and upon entering the sitting room where Mr. Ward had been reclining in a rocking chair, found him sitting upright, with one hand pointed toward the telephone, signifying his immediate need of medical assistance. Drs. McMillan and Armstrong responded within a few minutes, but their efforts were of no avail, death having taken place before their arrival. Deseased was born in Marlon township, August 24, 1868, and would have been 66 years of age August 24, 1922. He spent his early boyhood days here, attending the district school and at on early age began taking on active interest in local affairs, which in later years made him a leader among men. Along the early part of 1900 he moved to Charlevoix, where he has since resided. During early manhood he began a career of activity in grange work, and later was master of Charlevoix County Pomona Grange, at that time and mainly through his efforts, the largest in membership of any in the state. In 1907 he was a member of the city council, later serving as supervisor from the third ward, which position he filled at different times and was acting in this capacity at the time of his death. Edward B. Ward was one of the successful farmer business men of the region. He was an intellectual power. He studied assiduously every problem. He was a man of fixed convictions, arrived at by a careful study of conditions and history. As a young man he endured every hardship of the northern woods, every reverse of business and learned to do by doing. His executive ability, his great confidence in the final prevalence of what was right, his tremendous energy and calm judgment gave him ultimate success, as men figure results, but he never forgot the road by which he came, and even back-tracked over it with a helping hand for some strugglers not equal to its hardshlps. His optimism waa contagious. He always stood for the upbuilding of the city and was ever on the alert and progressive. In his passing Charlevoix has lost one of its best friends, but his activities will ever remain a fragrant memory and an inspiring example. He leaves to mourn his passing an aged mother, wife, one daughter, Edna, a brother, John of besides numerous friends not only in Charlevoix, but in all sections of the state. The funeral was held from the home, corner State and Mason streets, Saturday at 3:00 p. m. Rev. H. R. E. Quant of the M. E, church, conducting the services at the house, the Masonic order, of which he had long been a member, acting as honorary escort to Brookside cemetery, where the full Masonic ritualistic service was held. Floral tributes were in abundance, showing in a marked degree the high esteem in wbich be was held by all.
