Wilkinson 1849-1933 OBITUARY Courtesy Charlevoix Library Obituaries FORMER RESIDENT DIED AT BELLAIRE BYRON P. WILKINSON WAS ATWOOD PIONEER Was First Postmaster of Village Active Church and Temperance Worker—Funeral Today Byron P. Wilkinson, one of the early pioneers of this section, passed away at his home in Bellaire Monday morning, March 6, 1933. He was born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1849. At an early age his father died, leaving him the sole support of his mother and younger brothers and sisters. When he was sixteen he began teaching school, and followed this occupation, for twenty-five years. He was also considerably in demand as a teacher of the old-fashioned singing school so much in vogue in the earlier days. In 1873 he was married to Sarah Marshall at Painesville, Ohio. About a year later they came to Michigan and hewed out a farm home at Atwood, Antrim county, Michigan, in the midst of an almost trackless forest. He was the first postmaster at Atwood, at a time when the one-armed Indian carried the mail from Traverse City to Cross Village, making one round trip a week. In 1904 he came to Charlevoix, where he lived until about five years ago, when he moved to Bellaire. His wife passed away in 1923 and about a year and a half later he married Mrs. Mary Utter of Bellaire. Beside his widow, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Roxana Morrow of Bellaire, and four sons, Dr. A. M. Wilkinson, Hollywood. California: Dr. F. H. Wilkinson. Charlevoix; James B. Wilkinson. Detroit; Charles E. Wilkinson, Lansing. There are also ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the residence in Bellaire Wednesday at 10 o'clock a. m. Interment in Brookside cemetery, Charlevoix. Mr. Wilkinson was active in church and Sunday school work, and an ardent worker for the cause of temperance and prohibition. He was a good citizen, a kind husband and father, and did his full share in helping to build up and develop this section of the country. ______________________________________ Michigan Death Certificate Name: Byron Paul Wilkinson Death Date: 06 Mar 1933 Event Place: Bellaire, Antrim, Michigan Gender: Male Age: 83 Marital Status: Married Birth Date: 04 Apr 1849 Birthplace: Pennsylvania File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/charlevoix/photos/tombstones/brookside/wilkinso180467gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
