The funeral service was Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Winchester Funeral home in Charlevoix. Father Thomas Neis of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiated. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Joseph was born April 10, 1911 in Detroit, the son of Mitchell and Constance (Wypch) Kociela. Except for his service in World War II with the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, Mr. Kociela was employed with Burroughs Corporation in Plymouth, Mich. from 1929 until his retirement in 1973 as a plastic mold maker. In 1951, he married Rose Reva, who preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 1997. Joseph and Rose moved from Farmington Hills to East Jordan in 1974 and then to Charlevoix in 1976. Mr. Kociela is survived by his son, Richard (Erin) Kociela of santa anna, California; three sisters, Genevieve (Stanley) Fredrick of Centerline, Mich., Helen Lane and Lette Kotkowicz, both of Coral Springs, Florida; and several grandchildren.
