The surroundings show he was killed in a bear fight, which resulted fatally for both, as the animal's body was found, near that of the dead man. Devereaux's body was in a sitting posture, braced against a log where he had evidently placed himself after the combat with the beast. The evidence of a terrible struggle was plainly visible all about, but those on the body were the most prominent. His left side, cheek, and legs had been gnawed nearly to the bone, one shoulder dislocated, and eye gouged out, his stomach almost torn open, and the marks of the bear's claws were discernible on various parts of his body. The bear had been shot through the shoulder and aggravated by his wounds. A terrible struggle evidently ensued.
