The Racine [WI] Daily Journal, May 2, 1899 1899
Cheboygan, Mich., May 2.-Dan Gillis, a well known resident, was murdered at 
Supervisor David Bowen's farm, near Onaway, Saturday evening. It is thought 
the murderer was waiting to kill Bowen on his return from the supervisor's 
meeting, and in the darkness mistook Gillis for Bowen and shot him dead.
