He appears as an infant with his parents in the 1861 Canadian Census. His baptismal records show he was baptized 5 Nov 1860 in St. James Colgan Church, Ontario, Canada. He died 14 Aug 1942, Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co., Michigan. He was the 9th of 11 children born to John Neelis and Rebecca Smith. They emigrated to Canada from Ireland about 1847. James arrived in Cheboygan in 1895, working as a lumberman. He married Nora Tessier-LaVigne 21 Aug 1890 in St. Mary's Church, Cheboygan. They had 8 children, with the youngest, Margaret Elizabeth, being my mother. All were born and raised in Cheboygan. Nora Eleanor Tessier LaVigne b:13 Apr 1875 Indian River, Cheboygan, MI d:16 Nov 1959, Jackson,Michigan at the home of her daughter Louise. Nora was the eldest of 12 children born to Joseph Tessier and Ezoa Charette. They were born in Quebec and lived/married in Clarence Creek, Ontario. They arrived in Michigan prior to the birth of their first child. From family history, Zoe` was a cook in the lumbermill camps and that's where Nora met her husband James.
