Austin DDS, 2001, Clare, Clare County, Michigan Obituary from the Clare County (MI) Review, July 6, 200l Dr. Alfred D. Austin, DDS, age 85, of Clare, passed away Thursday, June 28, at his summer residence at Eight Point Lake. He was born the son of Fred and Edith (Hubbard) Austin, on December 7, 1915, in Bellaire. He graduated from the University of Detroit Dental School and entered the US Navy where he served as a fighter pilot from 1940 to 1950. Dr. Austin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in the battle of the Philippines during WWII. He married Lucetta "Dolly" Bowler in 1944 in Oregon, and after his military career they settled in Clare where he practiced dentistry from 1950 to 1979. He was a member of the MDA, the ADA, the 9th District Dental Society, had served on the Clare Public School Board for 8 years, was a member of Rotary International since 1950, the VFW, St. Cecilia Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and had been honored as the Mecosta County Soil Conservationist of the Year for 1998. Dr. Austin is survived by his wife, "Dolly"; his children: Dr. Michael and Beverly Austin of Okemos, Susan and Joe Annese of Lancaster, PA, Dr. Patrick and Gladys Austin of Clare, Mary and Dr. Carl Winegar of Midland, Dr. Alfred Jr. and Paula Austin of Clare, and Jenny and Art Olsen of Manistee; a brother, William of Bellaire; a sister, Emily Gibbard of Orlando, Florida; 20 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Austin. Funeral services were held on Monday July 2nd, at ll:00 am from the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Clare. The rosary was recited on Sunday at 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial was in the St. Cecilia Cemetery. jic
