Cotton Dies Suddenly Doris Edith Gerow was born at Colonville, February 3, 1904, the daughter of Allen and Evaline Gerow. She attended the Colonville school until 1914 when the family moved to Clare. At the early age of 16 she graduated from Clare High School and then attended Central Michigan College for one year preparing herself for a teaching career. She later received her degree from Central Michigan College in 1949. During her 30 years of teaching she was employed at Rogers City, Farwell, West Grant, Flint, St. Petersburg, Florida and Clare. June 27, 1955 she was married to Lester Cotton, a childhood sweetheart, at the Clare Methodist church. She passed away suddenly, Wednesday noon, May 18 at Clare General Hospital from a massive heart attack. Left to mourn are her devoted husband, three sisters, Mrs. Effie Belknap, St. Petersburg, Florida, Mrs. Mabel Root, Duluth, Minnesota, Mrs. Floy Robinette, Chesaning and one brother, William Gerow of Clare. She also leaves three step- children, Robert Cotton of New Orleans, La., Raymond Cotton, Morganville, New Jersey and Nancy Ann Stultz and eleven step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends both in Michigan and Florida where they spent the past several winters at Palmetto. Doris was a long time member of the Methodist church where she was a faithful worker, having been church organist for many years and was first president of the W.S.C.S. She lived a practicing Christian life. She was also a member and past matron of Zenobia Chapter No. 129 O.E.S. where she was a musician for 26 consecutive years. A member of Clara Rebekah lodge, past president of C.G.M. a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, the retired teachers club, also the Eastern Star Club and Palmetto Tourist Club, both of Palmetto, Florida. Funeral Services were held Saturday afternoon, May 21 at Clare Methodist church with Rev. Raymond Norton officiating and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.
