Clute, age 73, of Clare, passed away on Thursday, Dec. l7, at his home. He was born the son of James A. and Elma (Gillis) Clute on March 1, 1925 in Clare. He had been the owner and operator of Clute's Garage and Wrecker Service in Clare until poor health forced his retirement in 1997. He entered the US Army immediately after graduation from Clare High School and served as a Military Prisoner Escort guard from 1943-1946 in northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. He married Virginia Smith on June 18, 1949, in St. John's Michigan, and she survives him. Art had served the community for years as a member of the Clare Fire Dept. and had served as the Assistant Chief. Survivors include his wife Virginia, sons: James and Angela of Dallas, Tx., Tom and Lynnette of Traverse City, and David and Carol of Clare, a sister Kay Stowe of Grand Marais, six Grandchildren: Austin of Dallas, Beth, Kyle, and Kevin of Traverse City, and Angela and Megan of Clare. Also surviving are three nieces: Lynn, Nikki, and Morene and cousins; Bill and Betty Montney. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Moreen, a daughter Susan, and a grandson Nicolas. Services were held in Private and final resting place was in Cherry Grove Cemdtery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Clare, or the Clare County Historical Museum.
