Virginia S. Clute, age 73, of Clare, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Clare. She was born the daughter of Carl A. and Susie (Axtell) Smith on June 18, 1925 in Washington, Indiana. She married Arthur Clute in St. Johns, Mich. on June 18 1949, and he preceded her in death on December 17, 1998. Mrs. Clute had graduated from CMU with a B.S. and M.A. in Education. She had taught in Muskegon, Farwell, and Clare Public Schools and had retired in 1990. Survivors include three sons, James and Angela of Dallas, TX., Thomas and Lynnette of Traverse City and David and Carol of Clare; Grandchildren, Austin, Bethm Kyle, Kevin, Angela, and Megan; Brothers Horace Smith of Kansas, Dr. Robert Smith of Tuscola, Ill,, and Henry Smith of Lapeer; a sister, Catherine Jones of Connecticut and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter Susan, grandson Nicolas, a brother and a sister. Funeral services will be private and final resting place will be in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Clare County or the Clare County Historical Museum.
