Marilla Evaline, daughter of John W. and Harriet Jane Hampton, was born in Meigs County, Ohio, on January 29, 1868, and passed away at the Clare Hospital on February 12, 1943 at the age of seventy-five years and fourteen days. She came to Clare with her parents at the age of sixteen and with the exception of two years in Florida has spent the rest of her life in this vicinity. She was married August 29, 1888 to Barney W. Gerow. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Neithercut, of Flint, and Mrs. Floy Robinette, of Chesaning. Mr. Gerow passed away October 21, 1892. She was united in marriage March 22, 1903, to his brother, Allen Gerow, and Mrs. Doris Empey was born of this union. Allen Gerow died September 8, 1934. Mrs. Gerow fell at her home on December second and fractured her hip. She never recovered from this accident, and due to her advanced years and failing health was unable to rally from the shock. Mrs. Gerow has been an active member of the church her entire adult life and at the time of her death was a member of the Clare Methodist church. She was also an Honorary member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the church and a member of Zenobin Chapter No. 129, Order of the Eastern Star. She will be greatly missed by her many friends as she always had a cheerful smile and was patient and uncomplaining. She leaves to mourn her loss her three daughters, one granddaughter and five grandsons, two of whom are in the service of their country. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mayme Richmond, of Regina, Sask.; one brother, Clinton Hampton, of Nelsonville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held from the Clare Methodist Church at 2:00 (CWT) Monday afternoon, with Dr. John H. Hall officiating and interment made in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
