Clare Sentinel, April 17, 1942
Charles Malcom Goodenow, son of Charles Nelson and Martha Jane Goodenow, was 
born in Clare, April 11, 1880, and passed from this life at his home in Hatton 
township, April 8, 1942, at the age of sixty-one years, eleven months and 
twenty-eight days.

In 1901 he was united in marriage to Philla Leosh and to this union were born 
two children, a daughter, Mrs. Martha Rought, of Hesperia, and a son, Merle, 
who has always lived near and farmed with his father.

Charlie, as he was affectionately called by everyone, has lived in and around 
Clare most of his life with the exception of eight years spent in Marion.  He 
was a kind an loving husband and father and a good neighbor.

Surviving are his wife, the two children; two sisters, Mrs. Allie Wilson, of 
Clare, and Mrs. Celia Johnston, of Dubuque, Iowa, nine grandchildren, Marjorie 
Ellen, Phyllis Alma, Charles William and Clifford Merlyn Goodenow, Doris 
Maxine, Dale Leroy and Jeanie Delight Rought, and Harold and Vivian Adams; 
three great grandchildren, Beverly, Lester and Sandra Adams; other relatives 
and a host of friends.  To all Charles’ death has been a great shock.

Funeral services were held from the Doherty Funeral Home at 2:00 o’clock 
Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Floyd Galusha officiating, and interment in 
Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Among those attending the services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Basil 
Rought, of Hesperia; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Adams, of Shelby; Mrs. Cecile Burr, 
of Coleman; Jay Thomas, of Bay City; Mr. and Mrs. Bretz and Mrs. Harold 
Robins, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leosh, of Grant; Mr. and Mrs. Frank 
Murry, of Marion; Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Allen, of Midland; Mr. and Mrs. Dale 
Travis, of Ithaca; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Barttelmew, Mr. and Mrs. Loren 
Barttelmew and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Doan, of Evart.
