Horton (Martin) elhzm@tir.com March 13, 2005, 7:47 pm Unknown "OLIVER GOSINE LAID TO REST FRIDAY OLIVER GOSINE was born in Montreal, Canada, May 14, 1846 (?-or 8?). He came to Michigan when a young man and settled in Genesee County. There he married ANNA ALBRO, who preceeded him in death in 1922. To this union were born two daughters, MRS. SUSAN MITCHELL (GOSINE), and MRS. LENA MAY SHARP (BEEMER) (GOSINE). He was among the first settlers in Clare County and took pride in reminding all his acquaintances of this fact. He passed away January 8, (date unreadable) at a convalescent home in (unreadable). He leaves to mourn his loss, one daughter, MRS. LENA MAY SHARP, four grandchildren: MARIE BAILEY (BEEMER) of Old Harbor, AK; FRANCES MARGARET MARTIN (BEEMER) of Flint; SUSAN JANE CAMPBELL (BEEMER) and ARTHUR BEEMER of this city. Several nieces and nephews of Flint and Saginaw, and several greatgrandchildren and many friends. While visiting his birthplace in 1938, he went to the missiom where he was baptized and rendered a copy of his baptismal record. The mission is now a beautiful cathedral. He was christened OLIVER GATIEN. His relatives in and near montreal, Canada carry that name. He has many living nieces and nephews whom he saw in 1938. He is the seventh son of a seventh son, and one of family of fourteen. He had seven sisters. He worked on the Canal Lachiene when a boy and on the boats on Lake Champlain. He was an expert swimmer and has saved several lives by this accomplishment. He worked with threshing crews in the Dakotas and remembers the thrill at seeing his first threshing machine. In his later days, he worked in the lumber woods and served as a camp cook for many days. He came to Harrison in 1885. Applied for citizenship in 1888 and received his citizenship certificate in 1895. He was a lover of the out of doors and an expert boatsman and fisherman, especially in his younger days. He possessed a sunny disposition always mentioned that he never had an enemy. He was always fearless and has always said he has never seen anything of which he was afraid. Funeral services were held at the St. Athanasius church here with Rev. Fr. C.DANIEL BROPHY officiating and laid to rest in Maple Grove cemetery. Pall bearers were JOHN KEMMIS, GEORGE BATES, FRED SCHAAF, FRANK MYERS, and RALPH and ROY EATON." Additional Comments: OLIVER GOSINE (GATIEN) was my paternal greatgrandfather.
