Goatley was born on October 21, 1922 in Graves County, Kentucky as the son of Ivo and Rita (Elliott) Goatley. He was one of seven children with brother, James (wife Dorothy) Goatley, and sisters, Ruby, Durbin, Christine Copeland, Marie Shomo, Mary Rose Leasor, and Alene Froess. On June 21, 1942, he was wed to Jettie Mae (Hawkins) Goatley in Charleston, Missouri. Together they raised a daughter, Kathryn (husband Brian) Irwin of Redford. Joe moved from Hazel Park to Harrison in 198l, where he became a member of the VFW Post 1075 and the Harrison Lions Club. He enjoyed snowmobiling with the Harrison Snow Riders and working at the Lions Club during Bingo. He was a great guy who was always helping people and treated everyone as he would want to be treated. Mr. Goatley died on Friday, April 27, 2001 at the age of 78. He leaves behind his wife, daughter, brother, sister, Christine; two grandchildren, Stephanie Thomas and Brian Thomas. Preceding him in death are his parents; and sisters, Ruby, Marie, Mary Rose and Alene. Visitation was held on Tuesday, May l at 2-8 p.m. with a Lions service and wake service at 7:00 pm at Stocking funeral Home. A funeral service was held to celebrate his life on Wednesday, May 2, at ll:00 am at St. Athanasius Catholic Church with Father Noel Rudy presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the Lions Club Leader Dog Program. Arrangements were entrusted to Stocking Funeral Home, Harrison.
