Thomas Jefferson Hartman, eldest son of John and Amanda Hartman, was born in Vanloo, Hancock County, Ohio, July 29th, 1857, and passed away May 27th, 1939, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was stricken Thursday afternoon while visiting at the home of his son, Glenn and family at Pontiac, death following an operation from which he never regained consciousness. In the year of 1880, July 3rd, he was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Sunday of Pleasant Lake, Indiana. To this union were born nine children, two dying in infancy. The deceased will be well remembered as one of the early pioneers of this county, having come here from Indiana in the spring of 1882, settling in Clare County where he had spent the remainder of his life. He leaves to mourn besides the faithful wife, seven children, Pearl of Grand Rapids, Will of Bay City, Claude of Houghton, Glenn of Pontiac, John, Mrs. Maude Gordon and Mrs. Carrie Green of Clare, 25 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, one brother, Albert of Allegan, Michigan, also nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Green, at 1:30, and from the Brown Corners United Brethren Church, at 2:00 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, with the Revs. M. R. Honderich and Chas. Kleinhardt officiating. He was laid to rest beside his father in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Sunday, Mrs. Della Spearow, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Powerman and son, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sams, Mr. and Mrs. H. Wolfe and family, Mrs. Lola Klink, all of Indiana; Mrs. Cora Kreable, of Montpelier, Ohio; Albert Hartman, Mrs. Bina Dendal and Mrs. Oyde Green, of Allegan; Mrs. Wm. Powell and two boys, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Swager and son, of Jonesville; Mrs. Nora Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Hartman and son, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Iman, Mr. and Mrs. Mott, Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Mott, of Pontiac; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reed and daughter, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Baures and two boys, of Bay City; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartman and son, Mr. and Mrs. John Gordon and Mrs. Adolph Hierholzer, of Midland; Mrs. Nina Freed and children, of Maple Rapids; Mrs. Josie Sunday, of Hastings; Harve Ritter, of Detroit; Harold and Ralph Freed, of Coldwater; and Mr. and Mrs. Honey Hilborn, of West Branch.
