Mary Katherine Sunday, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sunday, was born in Steuben County, Indiana, June 26th, 1864, and passed away February 4, 1949, at the age of eighty four years, seven months, and eleven days. She was united in marriage to Thomas Jefferson Hartman, July 3rd, 1880. To this union were born nine children, two dying in infancy. The family moved to Clare county from Indiana in the spring of 1882, where they lived until the time of Mr. Hartman’s death in 1939, since which time Mrs. Hartman has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Green of Clare. She leaves to mourn her passing, seven children, Pearl Hartman, of Grand Rapids, Will Hartman, of Bay City, Claude Hartman, of Upper Peninsula, John Hartman, of Clare, Mrs. Maude Gordon, of Clare, Glen Hartman, of Pontiac, and Mrs. Carrie Green, of Clare; twenty five grand children, five step- grandchildren, one great great grandchild; one brother, Henry Sunday, of Pleasant Lake, Indiana; a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. They came to Clare county when she was eighteen years old, and she has resided here since. She was gentle, kind hearted and true, moreover generous to all who knew her. She enjoyed good health until about six months ago, and was known o many as “Grandma Hartman”. She was a faithful believer in her Saviour and was ready to go, and her smiling face and sunny disposition will be greatly missed by all. Relatives attending the services from a distance were from Pleasant Lake and Angola, Indiana; Jackson, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Sanford, Midland, Pontiac, Evart, Detroit, Bay City, Clarkston, Fowlerville, St. Louis, Mt. Clemens, Grand Rapids, and Houghton, U.P. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Chas. Hahn and Rev. Honderich officiating, and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.
