Sykora., 2001, Clare, Clare County, Michigan Obituary from the Clare County (MI) Review, December 28, 2001: James J. Sykora, age 78, of Clare, passed away on December 22, 2001 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. He was born the son of Joseph and Marie (Pobursky) Sykora on September 21, 1923 in St. Johns. He had been married to Patricia Gorman on July 18, 1953. They later divorced and became "friends". Jim had served with the U.S.Air Force during WWII, was a member of the American Legion, the Clare Moose Lodge, the Clare Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Clare Kiwanis Club. Jim is probably best known as an Auctioneer. He attended Reppert Auction School in 1948 and started his career as an auctioneer for the Prince and Co. Livestock Auction in St Johns and sold there for many years. He sold at the Marion Livestock auction for 16 years, Gaylord Livestock Auction for 17 years, Standish Livestock for 17 years, Clare Livestock Auction for 10 years, and continued to fill in there; he sold at Breckenridge for 15 years. He put in 32 years at the Michigan Livestock Yards at St. Louis, and had expanded his private Auction business to over 100 private sales a year while maintaining the livestock sales. He also worked all over the state conducting 4-H auctions for over 44 years. He had competed in the World Championship Livestock Auctioneer Contest in 1967 and placed second. He had been inducted into the Michigan State Livestock Hall of Fame on January 23, 200l. He had served on the Association's Board of Directors from, 1967 to 1971. He is survived by his children Scott and Julie Sykora, and Trese and Robbin Harsh, all of Clare; a brother Fred of St Johns; his grandchildren Macy, Jayda, Ryan, Rebecca, Abegail, Jacob, and Aaron; and great grandchildren Kyle, Destiny, and Aubrey. He was preceeded in death by his sisters Mary Dean and Helen Henny, and a brother Joe Sykora. Funeral services were held on December 26, 2001 from the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home in Clare. Burial was in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Clare Kiwanis Club. jic
