PFANNES John V. Pfannes, one of the first true pioneer residents of Mann Siding, Hatton Township, passed on to eternity on March 10, 1965. He received the holy rites of the Catholic Church a few days previous, and died a very peaceful death. He passed away in the house he had personally built in February of 1898. John Pfannes, the last surviving child of Nickolaus and Kunighunda Pfannes, was born in Grosslangheim, Germany, on July 26, 1872, and at the age of 16 he came to America. He farmed in the state of Kansas, spent a few years in Chicago along with his brother, then he and a brother-in-law migrated to Iowa where he farmed again and accumulated a train car of goods. He then moved to Michigan, on the way stopping in Chicago to marry Eva Marie Kraft, on February 1898, and came on to Harrison, and they settled on the farm in Hatton Township. John Pfannes was an active member of his community, and held the office of treasurer of the school board, and served as justice of the peace. John was first a Christian, a man fortified with the love of God. Everyone will remember him as a man of action, and good humor. A hard worker to the very end, but most of all, he was a father worshipped by his family. He is survived by one daughter, Anna, and five sons: Sebastian, of Flint; Nickolaus, of Evart; Edward, of Detroit, and William and Richard, of Saginaw. One son, Willy, preceded him at the age of two years. He also leaves fifteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Requiem High mass was celebrated in St. Athnasius Church, Saturday morning, March 14, by Rev. Father James Fitz Patrick, with William Pfannes Jr., grandson of the departed, and James Hoskey, great-grandson, serving at the mass. grandsons of the departed served as pallbearers, John and Carl Hoskey, John Pfannes, Paul Yambrick, Larry Snively and Douglas Pfannes. Interment was made in St. Athanasius Cemetery, Harrison. The Clare County Cleaver Inc. Harrison, Michigan Page 10, Thursday October 28, 1999
