Philip Van Conant was born in Prince Edward County, Canada on May 29, 1839, son of Lester & Sarah Van Conant. He was united in mariage to Miss Almeda Lyons on February 20, 1868 at Oswego, New York. They came to Michigan in September the same year and settled on a farm in Macomb County where they lived until coming to Clare County in April 1878, making the same farm their home for 56 years. In January 1934 owing to ill health, they gave up their home to reside with their daughter, when death called him on January 16, 1936. Besides his faithful wife he is survied by a son, Edward Van Conant and a daughter Mrs. George Dennis, both of Vernon. Four granddaughters, Mrs. Ellen Henderson of Vernon, Mrs. Grace Ackerman of Clare, Mrs. Ruth Miller of Farwell, and Mrs. Gertrude Marshall of Pontiac, eleven great-grand children and two great- great-grand childen. He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by the family circle and a host of friends. For many years he has been a member of the Clare Methodist Church. Mr. Van Conant's life might be likened to the beautiful works of Bryant's immortal poem. So live that when thy summons come To join that innumerable caravan Which reaches to that mysterious realm Where each shall take his chamber In the silent halls of Death Thou go not like a quaray slave at night Scourged to is dungeons, But sustained and soothed By a unfaultering faith approach they grave Like one who wraps the draperies of his couch about him, And lies down to pleasant dreams. Funeral Services were held from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, January the 19th, conducted by Rev. George Stanford and burial made in Cherry Grove. Those attending from a distance were: Mrs. Earl Deacons of Imlay City, Ernest Van Conant, Miss Madeline Van Conant, and George Mc Ginnis of Clifford; Mr and Mrs. Grant De Foe, Mrs. Sarah Robinson of Plymouth, Mr & Mrs. George Ditmas, Mr & Mrs. O.C. Anderson, M & Mrs. Florus Pierson and Mrs. Helen Pierson of Flint, Mr & Mrs. Aubrey Pierson of Detroit, Mr & Mrs. Frank Marshall of Pontiac.
