Almeda Lyons was born May 13, 1843 at Prince Edward County, Canada, to Thomas & Cynitha Lyons. Four brothers and two sisters have preceded her in death. One sister Mrs. Helen Pierson of Flint, survives. On Febrary 20 1868, she was wedded to Phillip Van Conant. This was a happy union which continued for 68 years. They came to Michigan in September 1868 and settled on a farm in Macomb County. They moved to Dover, Clare County in April 1878, where they have lived a contented and useful life until Mrs.Van Conants health failed in January 1934, at this time they went to the home of their daugher in Vernon, where they spent two more peaceful years together, and where Mr. Van Conant passed away, and she answered the final summons sixteen months later, May 8 1937. A son, Edward and a daughter Mrs. Hattie Dennis of Vernon, four grand-daughters, Mrs. Ellen Henderson of Vernon, Mrs. Grace Ackerman of Clare, Mrs. Ruth Miller of Farwell, and Mrs. Gertrude Marshall of Pontiac, eleven great-grand children, and three great-great-grandchildren will long cherish the memory of this splendid mother and grandmother. Back of this noble life was the fact that she had a profound faith in Gord and found great comfort in her church. Those from a distance attending the last rites were: Mrs. Helen Pierson, Mr & Mrs. Burleigh Pierson, Mr & Mrs. O.C. Anderson of Flint, Mrs. Sarah Defoe, Mrs Jay Sutton, Mrs. Gertrude Marshall and son Michael of Pontiac, Mr. & Mrs. Grant Defoe and Frank Defoe of Detroit. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church May 10, with Rev. George Stanford officiating and the remains interred in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
