Wood Passed Away After Lingering Illness Caused by Stroke William Henry Wood was born in Mimia [Miami] County, Indiana, on the 23rd day of September, 1861 and passed from this life at the Clare County General Hospital July 23rd, 1937, at the age of 75 years and 10 months, following a stroke. At the age of six years he came with his parents to Michigan and settled on a farm in Sheridan township, Clare county. In 1869 or 1870 he attended school at Dover, said to be the first school in Clare County. At that time Mr. Pleasant was the nearest trading post. He was united in marriage to Catherine Ann James, of Clare, December 24, 1887. To this union were born two daughters, Ethel, who departed this life at Denver, Col., September 26th, 1924, and Clarabelle, living in Grand Rapids. Mrs. Wood passed from this life January 17, 1929. Mr. and Mrs. Wood lived in Clare with the exception of about 19 years spent in Thompsonville and Grand Rapids. He spent 16 months in the CCC camps at Harrison, Ozark, camp Kenneth and Long Lake, Upper Peninsula. He spent his 74th birthday in the camp where Lieut. Hilton and 250 of the boys gave him a birthday surprise. Since Mrs. Wood’s death he has made his home with his brother-in-law, Thomas James. Those left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Clarabelle, half sisters, Mrs. Mary Orvis, of Battle Creek, Mrs. Effie Harvey, of Clare, and half brothers, Charles, of Washington, John, of Oregon, and Jess, of Battle Creek, six grand children and five great grand children, a host of relatives and friends. Services were held at the Thurston Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, Rev. A. D. Telder officiating and interment made in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
