Clinton County Republican News 1956
(Joseph) Hanses was a bachelor and when stricken with fever and ague, was taken
to the home of a neighbor, Nicholas Martin.  On February 1, 1840, he married
Martin's daughter, Elizabeth - the first wedding in the township (Westphalia). 
It took place at the Martin home and Fr. Anthony Kopp performed the ceremony. 
The wedding tour was a walk from the Martin home to the humble cabin of the groom.
