DAVIS John B. Davis and John McDerby settled here in the spring of 1837. Mrs Davis was the former Eliza McDerby. The couple had married in New York in 1831 and shortly thereafter started for Michigan to carve a home in the wilderness. They first located in Wayne County, then came to Eaton County where Davis had secured 80 acres of land from the government. Two other families came with them. The men were obliged to chop a road through the woods for a distance of six miles in order to draw their household good through to their land. When the Davis family reached Eaton County the father had only a three- dollar "wildcat" bill, and before he could make use of it the issuing bank failed. For four years the family did not have one penny in cash. While their log shanty was being built the Davis family was entertained by the Bowens.
