James Gray was born in Norfolk County, England, June 21, 1825, and was there reared and educated. There also was solemnized his marriage to Miss Rachel Rogers, who was born September 13, 1824. They came to America in 1851, remaining in the state of New York until 1857, when they came to Michigan, passing the first two years in Marshall, Calhoun County and then removing to Eaton County, where Mr. Gray bought forty acres of wild land, in section 6, Sunfield township, reclaiming the greater portion and then disposing of the property and buying his present homestead farm of eighty acres, in section 5, same township, developing the same into one of the valuable farms of this part of the county and having resided on the place the greater portion of the time since. He resided for varying intervals in Vermontville, Lake Odessa and in the village of Sunfield, but after the death of his wife, he returned to the farm, where he now makes his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McGuire, the latter having been born prior to the removal of the family from England. Mr. Gray is a stanch adherent of the Democratic Party and is a citizen of sterling character, represented by all who knew him. His health is now impaired, owing to the infirmities due to his advanced age.
