In 1855, at 21 years of age, Benjamin James Grier came to Michigan
with his father's, Thomas Grier's family. He was first engaged in
business in Houghton on Lake Superior. But he moved to Charlotte to
start the Grier's Mill. He was a member of the Congregational church
and very active in city politics, a member of the school board,member
of the Masons,
a fireman. On February 9, 1883, his mill exploded, killing Mr. Grier
and his employee William Gordon.
Pall bearers were G.W. Sherwood,Ellzey Hayden, F.A. Hooker,
F.E. Leiter and other notables of Charlotte.
