He was first engaged in business in Houghton on Lake Superior. But he moved to Charlotte to start the Grier's Mill. He was a member of the Congregational church and very active in city politics, a member of the school board,member of the Masons, a fireman. On February 9, 1883, his mill exploded, killing Mr. Grier and his employee William Gordon. Pall bearers were G.W. Sherwood,Ellzey Hayden, F.A. Hooker, F.E. Leiter and other notables of Charlotte.
