Clouse - A Man to Remember EATON RAPIDS - July 23, 1969, will be a very important day in the life of Carmen Jean Clouse for two reasons. -It is the date of her birth. -It is the day the Army signed the official citation giving her father, Sgt. Duane L. Clouse, the Bronze Star medal - posthumously. Someday Carmen Jean will read for herself what kind of a man her father was. In the cold hard style of an Army citation, the Army noted Sgt. Clouse was a member of C troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry of the 25th division in Vietnam. On May 25, 1969, the citation notes his unit "came under intense attack from a large enemy force." When the personnel carrier of which he was the driver was struck by a rocket, Sgt. Clouse "climbed to the top of it and place heavy fire on the enemy which allowed his wounded comrade to be evacuated. "Exposing himself to hostile fire, Sgt. Clouse placed his injured comrade in the vehicle and drove him to a secure area." Then, the citation continues, "As Sgt. Clouse moved back to the beleaguered perimeter he was fatally wounded. His valorous actions were responsible for saving a man's life." Gently, yet as sincerely as a nation can, the sergeant's widow, Krystyna, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clouse; his sister, Sheila, and his brother, Steven, were given the sergeant's Bronze Star with Oak Leaf, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Servie Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service medal. The staff and students at Eaton Rapids High Schoo, from which Sgt. Clouse graduated in 1965, gave the family a special book with clippings and personal memorabilia of his life. They also set aside a group of books in the school library in his memory. Someday Carmen Jean may read the cold remembrances and, hopefully, understand the wrmth behind them.
