They were married August 16, 1934, in Sunfield. They were high school sweethearts. He is retired, and was a farmer, a former Eaton County Commissioner and on the Mental Health Board. OBITUARIES DENNIS L. BARNER Dennis L. Barner, 79, of Mulliken, died Monday evening, August 16, 1999 at a Lansing hospital following a long illness. Mr. Barner was born August 12, 1920 in Trezvent, Tennessee, a son of Dennis Zether and Lee Jackson Rodden. A retired Atlas Drop Forge employee, he was a member of and past master of Mulliken F. & A.M. #412, member of Mulliken O.E.S. #161, Mulliken Lions Club, Portland VFW Post 4090, and enjoyed playing the banjo and mandolin. Surviving are his wife, Louise, son, Ivan (Jill) Barner of Sunfield, step-son, Robert Barner of Lansing, 4 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, his sister, Bridgie Keelan of Lehigh Acres, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Wollum officiating. Military honors were provided by the Portland VFW Post 4090 at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Masonic services were held Wednesday evening. Pallbearers were Bruce Dixon, Thomas Hart, Kenneth Merryfield, Harold McDaniels, Louie Milbourne and John Sharp. LAWRENCE BOIK JR. Lawrence “Larry” Boik, Jr., 65, of Woodland, died Sunday afternoon, June 13, 1999, at a St. Johns nursing home. Mr. Boik was born March 20, 1934 in Highland Park, Michigan, a son of Lawrence and Nora (Ellis) Boik, Sr. Mr. Boik was a retired truck driver, an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Surviving are his wife, Linda, his daughter, Lenora Boik Swantek of Milford, 5 grandchildren, three step sons, Mark Pruitt of Grand Rapids, Mike and David Pruitt, both of Lansing, his mother, Nora Boik of Ovid, two brothers, Jesse Boik of Ovid and Gary Boik of Cutleoka, Tennessee, nieces and nephews. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Rev. George Speas of Kilpatrick United Brethren Church officiating. Interment was in Woodland Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Daniel Boik, Steven Boik, Roger Ellison, Michael Pruitt, Jason Smith and Josh Smith. KERWIN DARRYL BOOHER Kerwin Darryl Booher, 62, of Lucas, died Tuesday at December 29, 1998 at his residence in Lucas. He was born March 6, 1936, in Hastings, son of Russell and Mabel (VanBlarcom) Booher. In 1998, Kerwin retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he had been a mail carrier for the Cadillac area and previously for the Manistee area. Kerwin was a veteran of the US Armed Forces. He was a life member of the Legion Post #300 in Lake City and the Eagles Lodge in Lake City. Kerwin is survived by: 2 sons, Joseph (Dawn) Booher of Middleville, and Keith (Linda) Booher of Toledo, Ohio; his granddaughter, Devann Booher of Toledo; his mother, Mable Booher of Vermontville; 2 brothers, Vernon (Ann) Booher of Lake Odessa, and Durwood (Jeanne) Booher of Battle Creek; and his special friend Pearl Mead of Lucas. Kerwin was preceded in death by: his wife, Dorothy; and his father, Russell Booher. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wexford-Missaukee. The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements. JAMES BRIGHTON James “Thumper” Brighton, age 49, passed away July 25, 1999 at Hastings, Michigan. He was born August 30, 1949 in Lansing, Michigan. He worked at Clay Products in Grand Ledge from 1969 to 1987 and for Peckham Industries as a Supervisor until retirement in October 1998. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Bonnie and daughter Lisa (Mark) Nurenberg, sons Jamie (Jamie) Brighton, Jay (Angela) Brighton, 7 grandchildren, Zackary, Amber, Ashley Nurenberg, Katelynn, Andrew, Jacob, and Brenden Brighton, his mother, Lucretia Thomas, sisters, Katie (Larry) Snoke, Vicki Smith, Grace (Carl) Thomas, Blanche (Larry) Spitzley, Brenda (Randy) Leonard, brothers, Mike, (Shirley) Brighton, George Brighton, Bob Schoonover, TR (Terry) Schoonover, father-in-law, William Curtis, and many aunts and uncles. VINCIEN MARY BROWN Vincien Mary Brown, of Lake Odessa, Michigan passed away Sunday, March 14, 1999 at Pennock Hospital in Hastings, Michigan at the age of 87. She was born September 11, 1911 in Freesoil, Michigan, daughter of Frank and Petra (Alexandria) Buttas. Vincien was preceded in death by her husband Elmer H. Brown and both her mother and father. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Gordon) Benson of Traverse City, MI, two nephews, David (Beverly) Brown of Vermontville, MI, and Ron (Sharon) Starovecz of Caledonia, MI, two nieces, Sharon (Ken) Duchene of Rochester, MI, and Sandra (Bill) Wright of Grand Rapids, MI, and special friend, Mary Lou (Ken) Sutter of Clarksville, MI. A graveside service was held Friday, March 19, 1999 at the Lithuanian Freedom Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI. Arrangements were made by the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, MI DANIEL ALAN BUMSTEAD Daniel passed away Monday, October 18, 1999 at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of 38. He was born on June 13, 1961 in Sunfield, Ohio, the son of Clifford W. and Dorothy A. (Adams) Bumstead. Dan worked at Lowell Engineering for the past three years. He enjoyed Beetle Bug cars, and camping. Surviving are his father and mother, Clifford W. Bumstead of Irons, Michigan and Dorothy A. Bumstead of Sunfield, Michigan, 2 brothers, Timothy Bumstead of Comstock Park, Michigan and David (Linda) Bumstead of Kent City, Michigan, 1 sister, Sara (Bill) Hildebrant of Sunfield, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Friday, October 22 1999 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, Michigan, with the Rev. Interment service followed the service at the funeral home at the East Sebewa Cemetery. JOHNNIE F. CATHCART Johnnie F. Cathcart, 83, of Mulliken, died Wednesday morning, September 15, 1999 at hospice of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, following a long illness. Mr. Cathcart was born May 3, 1916 in Nettleton, Mississippi, a son of William Clayt and Mary (Benton) Cathcart. A retired Motor Wheel employee, he was a member of the Mulliken United Methodist church and an Amateur Radio Operator. Together with his wife, he operated Cathcart Radio and Television Service in Mulliken for 34 years. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen, three sons, Donald (Janet) Cathcart and Ronald (Erminia) Cathcart, both of Battle Creek, Jimmy (Deidre) Cathcart of Charlotte, six grandchildren, one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Mulliken United Methodist church with pastor don Wollum officiating. Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Paul, David, Bradley, Timothy and Christopher Cathcart. Honorary bearers were James Albaugh and Harold McDaniels. Arrangements were handled by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken. HENRY FRANKLIN CLEMENTS Henry Franklin Clements, age 86 passed away January 13, 1999 at Delta Township, Eaton County Michigan. He was born December 28, 1909 in Waterman, Illinois, son of George A. and Mae E. (Gallup) Coppess Reahm. Mr. Coppess lived in the Sunfield area nearly all his life. He was a graduate of Sunfield High School in 1930. John owned and worked his own farm. He was preceded in death by his father, George A. Coppess in 1953, mother, Mae (Gallup) Coppess Reahm in 1983, special grandfather, John S. Gallup in 1938, sisters, Lucy Coppess in 1917, Ruth Coppess in 1925, brothers, George M. MYRTIE BELL (HAGER) COPPESS Mrs Coppess passed away Tuesday, November 9, 1999 in her farm home on Round Lake Road, Sunfield, at the age of 92. She was born on November 3, 1907 in Sunfield Twp., the daughter of Ira Jay Hager and Ethel Bell (Porter) Hager. Mrs Coppess lived in the Vermontville area and graduated from Vermontville High School in 1926. That same year she moved to Sunfield. In 1927 she attended Western State Teachers College in Kalamazoo and graduated in 1930 with an Elementary Life Teaching Certificate. She was a teacher at Hager School, and did substitute teaching at Sunfield Elementary School for six years (1957-1963), she was a 4-H leader for 10 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, Ethel Bell (Porter) Hager in 1933, and Ira Jay Hager in 1967. An infant brother (year unknown); sister, Ruthie Lorita 1909; brother, Merton LaVearl Hager, 1989; husband, John Edward Coppess 1999. Surviving are her four children, Betty (Jack) Smith of Sunfield, Doris (Darrell) Bell of Sunfield, Ruth Ann (Ron) Fuller of Houston, Texas and Jack E. Custer, age 89, of Lake Odessa passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 1999 at Thornapple Manor, Hastings. She was born November 28, 1909 in Alto, MI the daughter of Noah and Melinda (Keller) Lite. She married Roscoe Custer on June 14, 1941 and he preceded her in death on August 20, 1988. Mabel belonged to the Women’s Missionary Association. Surviving are her daughters, Margaret (Duane) Schaibly of Lake Odessa; Kathleen (Floyd) Lundy of Bellefontaine, Ohio; son, Leland (Sharon) Custer of Huntington, Indiana; grandchildren, Nathan, Robert, and Lisa Custer; step-grandchildren, Jonathan, Timothy and Peggy Lundy; great-grandson, Damien Custer and step-great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jenni, Bethany, Julie, and Greg Lundy; nieces, Arloa Henry, and Meredith Hines. Dean, 79, former resident of Sunfield died Tuesday October 19, 1999 in Marietta, Ohio where he had resided. He was born in Sunfield, Michigan to the late Ray and Maude (Figg) Dean and was a graduate of Sunfield High School. He received his degree from Michigan State University and had been project engineer for the Dravo Corporation after moving to Marietta. He served with the 352nd Bomb Group in the Eighth Air force in World War II and held the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and received the Distinguished Flying Cross with three bronze stars from Jimmy Stewart his commanding officer. He flew two missions on D-Day in June of 1944 and flew a total of thirty-three bombing missions. He married Mary Alice Taylor who preceded him in death in 1980. One daughter survives this marriage, Lisa Offenberger of Milford, Ohio. He later married Barbara Betts who survives. He is also survived by two grandchildren; three stepsons; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great grandchild and one brother, Loyal Dean of Lansing and two sisters, Ella Campbell of Sunfield and Asenath Taylor of Holt, Michigan. Funeral services were held in Marietta, Ohio on Friday with full military rites. Interment was in Marietta. Doolittle, 61, of Lansing, died Sunday, May 2, 1999 at his home. Mr. Doolittle was born April 24, 1938 in Roxand Township, a son of Charles E. and Ruth E. (Petrie) Doolittle. LEILA RUTH LEIFHEIT Mrs Leila Ruth Leifheit passed away Friday January 15, 1999 at the East Lansing Health Care Center at the age of 90. She was born September 20, 1908 in West Unity, Ohio, daughter of Frank and Ella Mae (Aumock) Bowers. On June 5, 1943 Leila married Harlan H. Leifheit at the LaValley Church in Ionia County, Michigan. Harlan preceded her in death November 7, 1991. Mrs Leifheit was a member of the Sebewa Center United Methodist Church, where she was very active in the United Methodist Womans Society, and taught Sunday school for many years. NORMA MARGARET MARSH Norma Margaret Marsh was born August 24, 1923 in rural Vermontville, Michigan, daughter of Alonzo and Edna (Vanderburg) Marsh. Norma passed away Sunday January 10, 1999 after a ten month battle to overcome a stroke. She is survived by one sister, Mary (Robert) Aspin of Mulliken, 2 foster daughters, Patricia (Mark) Sova of Fort Meyers, Florida and Charlene Wolf of Miami, Florida, 3 grandsons, Gary Wilcox, Gregory Wilcox, Timothy Ogle of Lake Odessa, 1 granddaughter Stormie Sova of Fort Meyers, Florida, 2 great grandchildren Cody and Cari Wilcox, 2 special nephews Howard (Sandra) Marsh of Okemos, and Gary (Carol) Marsh of Okemos, and many other nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sister-in-laws, Reva Marsh and Helen Marsh, brother-in-law, Winston Lake. Her special family Ken, Kathleen, Katrina, Kalvin and Kelsie Black of Sunfield. McDaniels, 74 of Mulliken, died Friday evening, January 8, 1999 at her home following a long illness. Merithew, 47, died February 24, 1999 at the home of her parents in Zephyrhills, Florida. She was born June 28, 1951 in Lansing, Michigan to George J. and Joyce (Dodge) Petrie. She was born July 16, 1935 in Ionia, Michigan, daughter of Foster and Viola (Sprague) Lake. Mrs Northrup married Richard O. Northrup on January 2, 1954. She was employed at Mapes Furniture Store for several years, and most recently at the River Inn Adult Foster Care, in Sunfield, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, both her parents, Foster and Viola; brothers, Austin, John B. and Foster Jr.; sister, Pauline; son-in-law, Jack L. Smith Jr.; grandson Kevin Lee Weitzel Jr. Surviving are one son, Larry (Candy) Northrup of Lake Odessa, three daughters, Linda Smith of Saranac, Nancy Northrup of Lowell, and Dolly (Mike) Southworth of Sunfield, and several grandchildren, two brothers, Melvin and Lloyd, three sisters, Irene, Nora Jane and Jeanette, several nieces and nephews. RICHARD OTTO NORTHRUP Richard “Dick” Otto Northrup of Sunfield passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, February 5, 1999 at the age of 65. He was born on January 2, 1934 in Ionia, Michigan, the son of Otto and Dalta (Witzel) Northrup. He attended Ionia High School, graduating in 1952. On January 2, 1954 he married Betty M. (Lake) in Ionia, Michigan. He was employed with Felpausch retiring in October of 1992. He also worked for Meijers for several years, and owned and operated 2 local bakeries in Saranac and Lake Odessa. He was a member of the Odd Fellows of Ionia for several years. He was always quick with a joke and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Northrup was preceded in death by both his parents, Otto and Dalta Northrup, one brother, John, one sister, Beatrice, sister-in-law, Leanie, son-in-law Jack L. Smith Jr. and a grandson, Kevin L. O’BRIEN Megan Margaret O’Brien, 16, of Mulliken, died Saturday afternoon, June 26, 1999, following an automobile accident at Cochran and St. Joe Hwy. Petrie, age 80 formerly of Sunfield, passed away November 6, 1999 at Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens, Georgia. She was born in the Sunfield area October 10, 1919 to Fred and Essie Reahm. She graduated from Sunfield High School and received her degree from Western Michigan University. She taught school for 23 years in the Grand Ledge school system (Mulliken) and the Lakewood School at Lake Odessa, Michigan. She was a member of the United Brethren Church in the Sunfield area and the Methodist church in Tavares, Florida and the Methodist church in Cornelia, Georgia. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Petrie of Mount Airy, Georgia, two daughters, Nancy (Kerry) Haynor of Sunfield Michigan and Mary Ellen (Phillip) Van Stempvoort of Jenison, Michigan; also survived by four grandchildren, Senior Airman Lee J. Haynor, Caroline Haynor, Brett Van Stempvoort, and Jenna Van Stempvoort; one sister, Pauline (Roy) Hough of Sunfield. Piercefield Bloom, 93, of Mulliken, died Friday afternoon, April 23, 1999, at a Charlotte nursing home. Mrs. Bloom was born February 13, 1906 in Belding, a daughter of Floyd and Ida Belle (Trowbridge) Dickerson. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bart Piercefield and Ike Bloom. Wayne was born March 20, 1937, in Dimondale, Michigan, the son of Kenneth and Beulah (Pomeroy) Powell. Wayne K. Powell began his love and devotion of 43 years to Yvonne J. Rogers on June 9, 1956, in Sunfield, Michigan. Mr. Powell had resided in the Harrison area since 1983, moving from Sunfield. Wayne attended the United Brethren Church of Harrison. He was a self-employed re-upholster and worked in maintenance part time at the Wilson State Park, Harrison. Born November 6, 1913 to Sylveen D., and Ola V. (Oneil) Parker at their farm on Mt. Hope Hwy at Loucks Road. Pauline attended the Loucks School through the 8th grade, graduated from Charlotte High School in 1931 and Lansing Business University in 1932. She married Corwin Smart in August of 1936; he died in 1972. Mrs Smart was employed at Lansing Citizen Loan for 9 ½ years, then returned to the country to work in the farm operation. She was a life member and Past Matron at Mulliken O.E.S. #161 and enjoyed the fellowship and work. She also enjoyed friends and neighbors at Swede’s in Mulliken. Mrs Smart leaves a sister, Erma Merritt of Albion, two nieces, Pamela (Pete) Reagle and Angela (Harry) Cousins, and two nephews, Stephen Macaluso and Larry Smart. She was a volunteer at Sparrow Hospital, neo-natal unit for 13 years, active in 4-H and a great supporter of Grand Ledge High School Band function. Steinhaus age 72, of Pewamo died Sunday, May 16, 1999 at mercy Hospital in Muskegon. She was born July 17, 1926 in Watersmeet and resided in Williamston and St. Johns before moving to Pewamo in 1990. She was a member of the Sunfield Lions club and the VFW Post 6464 of Fowlerville. She was married December 10, 1941 to Walter Steinhaus who survives her. JAMES LEO VAN BUREN Mr. Van Buren passed away Friday, July 9, 1999 at the age of 75. He was born July 31, 1923, son of Martha (Peabody) and Leon Van Buren. He was a retired farmer, also worked for many years as a plant guard at Diamond Reo Trucks, sold real estate in the area and owned a local restaurant for many years, and was very proud of having been awarded an Appreciation Award from the Sunfield SPY’s during his years as a restaurant owner. He enjoyed visiting with people, and took great pride in meeting people with he traveled, especially his trip to England and Scotland and then to Germany and the Netherlands with the Lakewood High School Band. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren many of whom he taught to drive and shared with them his love of fishing. James was a member for many years of the Mid-Forest Hunting and Fishing Lodge near Houghton Lake. He also was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church. James was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marilyn, of 52 years. Surviving are his children, Kathleen (Marvin) Hengesbach, Nancy (Larry) Brown, Carol (Tony) Santini, and David (Denise) Van Buren, 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Eunice (Edward) Black and Elaine (Forest) Nash and 2 sisters-in- law Madilyn (Durwood) Mast and Barb Scott, 1 brother-in-law, Don (Maxine) Hunter. He was born October 26, 1948 in Charlotte, Michigan; son of Keith and Geraldine (Richard) Wellman. Greg and Linda were married September 30, 1978. He retired from General Motors after many years of employment. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gerry Wellman and a brother Raymond Wellman. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, may 26, 1999 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, Michigan with the Rev. Brian K. Sheen of the Sunfield Methodist Church officiating. The pallbearers were Ted Crandell, Ken Stone, Clair Hewitt, Randy Wellman, Jay Bartlett, Billy Wellman, and Timothy Bartlett. For those wishing, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in memory of Greg G. Wellman. Interment followed at the Sunfield Cemetery where Rev. Brian K. Sheen had the committal service. ELOIS E. WHEATON Elois E. Wheaton, 80 of Vermontville, died Friday evening, January 8, 1999 at her Sunfield Township home following a long illness. Mrs Wheaton was born in the same house on November 16, 1918, the only child of E. Clifford and Elsie (Childs) Bosworth. She was a member of the West Sebewa Church of Christ and The Women’s Society of Bismark. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Wayne, three children, Winston Wheaton of Stanton, Valrie (Jay) Burrows of Shelby and Wendell (Ann) Wheaton of Grandville, 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a niece and two nephews. Services were held Wednesday at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Virgil D. McNeil officiating. Interment was in Sunfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Winston Wheaton, Wendell Wheaton, William Wheaton, Clifford Burrows, Tyfanie Garity, Phil Heinze and Tim Root. HERBERT LAVERN WILCOX Herbert LaVern Wilcox passed away January 13, 1999 at Gulf Coast Hospital Panama City, Florida at the age of 80 years. He was born on the family farm south of Sunfield Michigan, October 28, 1918, the son of Voight and Martha Lundquist Wilcox. He graduated from Sunfield High School in 1937 and married his high school sweetheart Shirley Jackson in 1939. They moved to Prudenville, Michigan, 37 years ago. LaVern retired from NAPA Auto in 1981. He is survived by his wife Shirley, one daughter Tamera (Gene) Moore of Paw Paw, Michigan, two sons, Jerry (Barb) Wilcox and James Wilcox of Houghton Lake. 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, his brother Jack (Phyllis) Wilcox and sister, Beth (Lynwood) Hynes of Sunfield.
