Root was born in Cayahoga County, Ohio, August 18, 1833 and departed this life at Mulliken January 11, 1928, aged 94 years, 4 months and 2 days. He is survived by 8 children, 30 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren. A son, Leonard, passed away at the age of 21 years. He enlisted in the Civil War in the spring of 1862 in the 23 Ohio, infantry and served under Col. R. B. Hayes and Major Wm. McKinley. During his service his first wife and 17-month-old son died. He was mustered out in July 1865. He returned to Ohio and later married Miss Anna Elizabeth Ingram the mother of his children. March 12, 1873 they moved to Eaton County, Michigan and settled on the farm, which they occupied until Mrs Root's death, May 20, 1904. Mr. Root continued to live there until July 5, 1907, when he married Mrs M. A. Campbell and moved to Mulliken. His children are George, Fred and Alfred of Roxand, Mrs. Lille Obrien, Stockbridge, Mrs Ida Cole and Mrs Ruby Green, Lansing, Mrs Elvira Jackson of Saginaw Road near Lansing and Mrs Alma Maskel of Grand Ledge. After the death of his last wife he lived with his niece, Miss Lulu Campbell, who was a daughter to him and tenderly cared for him in his last illness. The many beautiful floral offerings attested to the high esteem in which he was held. Flags were flown at half-mast in Mulliken Saturday the day of his funeral. He was laid to rest beside his second wife in the Mulliken cemetery, Rev. Gray officiating. There is no death! The stars go down, To rise upon some fairer shore; They brighten heavens jeweled crown They shine forever more. And ever near us, though unseen, The dear immortal spirits tread; For all the boundless universe Is life-there are no dead.
