RANDALL SUBMITTER: Jan Lubitz Sedore EMAIL: am0773@a1access.net DATE: May 21, 1999 PASSWORD> SURNAMES: RANDALL THE VERMONTVILLE ECHO Wednesday, July 27, 1904 KILLED BY LIGHTENING SAD ACCIDENT SATURDAY AFTERNOON ON DR. GREEN'S FARM Saturday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. people in this vicinity were startled by a sharp flash of lightening and in a few moments word was received that Clarence E. Randall had been struck by lightening and instantly killed. Doctor's Green and McEachran hastened to the home of Mr. A. P. Randall and worked over the young man, using every means to bring him to but all of no avail. At the time of the sad accident, he with his father and brother were busy in the hay field a short distance from the house, Mr. Randall driving the hay rake and the boys loading hay and drawing to the barn. Clarence was working upon the load at the time of the flash of lightning. When struck he fell instantly to the ground, and the team started to run but soon stopped. His brother Glen rushed to him but found he was dead when reached. The force of the lightning was so great that both shoes were torn from the feet of the unfortunate young man, one being thrown some distance. He carried his watch in his hip pocket and the lightning was so strong that the case was melted, though the works were not injured and continued to run all right. The funeral services took place Tuesday morning at the farm, Rev. Mosher conducting them and interment was in Woodlawn where Vermontville Tent K. O. T. M. M. conducted their impressive services. Clarence E. Randall was born December 7th, 1881, at Pine Plains Township, Allegan County, this state. When but a year old his parents removed to Vermontville where he has made his home ever since. He was possessed of quiet, retiring, disposition and had many friends. He joined the Maccabee Order during their recent contest for members but was affiliated with no other society. His sudden death is a great blow to his family and he will be greatly missed by his friends and neighbors. The sympathy of everyone for the bereaved family was plainly demonstrated by the large crowds who attended the funeral and extended their sympathy to the family.
