VANALSTINE was born in Erie, PA, January 17, 1826, and died October 17, 1907, at his home in Oneida, at the age of 81 years 9 mos. October 18, 1848 he was married to Miss Sarah WILLARD. He came to Michigan in 1849 and located on the land where he has since resided and which he had taken up two years before (1847). Seven children blessed this union, five sons and two daughters, all of whom are living and attended his funeral. The children are as follows: Wm. Mellville of Battle Creek, Mrs. Mary HOWARD of Boyne Falls, Orville and Miles of Lansing, Lincoln and Chas. of Grand Ledge, and Mrs. Lillie EDWARDS of Eagle. Mr. VANALSTINE lived in Rochester, N.Y. for a short time and afterwards lived in Ohio for five years previous to coming to Michigan. As a pedestrian he was hard to beat and performed many feats in that line before age affected him. On one occasion he walked to a point beyond Adrian from his home in Oneida and returned driving two cows, and was only absent three days. One evening he found that it was necessary that he be in Jackson that night and started out on foot for that city. He left home about sundown and was back for early breakfast the next morning. He leaves twenty grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday morning and the remains laid at rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Rev. Wellington DEPEW officiating.
