Whitney Succumbs to Attack of Pneumonia at Portland, Ore. Edwin R. Whitney, pioneer resident of this city, passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. J.E. Gellis, in Portland, Ore., Monday, November 15. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney left here September 20, expecting to spend some time with relatives in Oregon and California, returning about Christmas. Mr. Whitney was taken suddenly ill with pneumonia and was sick only five days. Mr. Whitney was born in New York, April 19, 1838, and came to Michigan when a young boy. When his country called to arms, he enlisted in Co. G, 27th Infantry, and served three years in the Civil war. Directly upon his return he was married to Miss Nancy MANN who preceded him in death March 13 of this year. One son, Albion Whitney,was born to this union, who passed away 38 years ago. April 17, Mr. Whitney was united in Marriage to Mrs. Jennie Smith who survives him. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Gellis and a brother, Wm. Whitney, of Forest Grove, Ore. The remains were brought here and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Fred Errington officiating. Burial was made in Oakwood, under the auspices of Earl Halbert Post, of which the deceased was an active member and had officiated in the capacity of color bearer for many years. Those from out of town to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith, Glenn Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Clary of Lansing, and Mrs. J. L. Smith of Middletville.
