Wells was born January 1st, 1813, in Onondaga County in the State of New York, where he resided until 1840 when he removed to Michigan and located the farm upon which he lived until the time of his death the 2nd of May 1903. December 20, 1841, Mr. Wells was united in marriage to Miss Mary Chatfield. Of this union there were born four sons and two daughters of whom three sons and the two daughters survive him. Nothing that can be said of Mr. Wells can either add to or detract from the high estimation in which he was held by all who knew him. He was one of the few of whom it can truly be said that those who knew him best esteemed him most. Mr. Wells led a quiet, undemonstrative life filled with good deeds and kindly acts performed without ostentation. He was par-excellence, the poor man's friend. Whatever property he had accumulated was the product of industry and frugality. He never took advantage of another's necessity that he might thereby enrich himself. We can say nothing higher in praise of his memory then to say: He was a true husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor and an honest and useful citizen. If greatness is to take the common things of life and walk truly among them, Mr. Wells was great. The family wish to extend their thanks to those who so kindly aided them in their sad bereavement, especially the choir from Vermontville who furnished such fine music.
