WILCOX SUBMITTER: Jan Lubitz Sedore EMAIL: am0773@a1access.net DATE: May 30, 1999 SURNAMES: WILCOX, BURNS THE SUNFIELD SENTINEL April 21, 1910 Page 1 HENRY H. WILCOX DIES OF HEART FAILURE Henry H. Wilcox, who resided with his son Fred and family 1 ½ miles south of this village, died Sunday afternoon about 4:30 of heart failure. For a few days Mr Wilcox had been going to the barn in the afternoon to get in bedding for the horses, although the hired men usually did this, and on Sunday afternoon he went to the barn as usual to look after these chores, and his grandson Voight went with him. Voight was overhead in the barn and called to his grandpa to hand him up a fork, which Mr Wilcox did and then turned to walk away. He took but a few steps and fell dear. Dr. Peacock was immediately called and he gave his opinion that Mr Wilcox was dead when he fell to the barn floor and heart failure was the cause. Others in the family have died in the same manner. Mr Wilcox was in his usual health up to his death and on Saturday attended a ball game in this village, which he seemed to enjoy very much. Mr Wilcox was a very pleasant man to meet and enjoyed the friendship of a large circle of acquaintances. He greatly enjoyed his home with his son Fred and family who always done everything for his comfort in his declining years. Henry Hopson Wilcox was born to Quaker parentage, January 16, 1831, at Smyrna, Chenango County, New York, and departed this life April 17, 1910 at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 1 day. He was married to Sophia Burns of Pekin, Niagara County, New York, December 25th, 1862. This union was broken by her death, August 6th, 1884. To this union were born three sons: Samuel who died at the age of nine years, Frank A. of Vancouver, Washington, and Fred H. of Sunfield Michigan. He had three brothers and three sisters of whom one brother and two sisters survive him. After leaving his native home he lived at Pekin, New York, four years-1861 to 1865 when he moved to Lyons, Ionia County, Michigan. He remained there until 1880 when he moved with his family to Sebewa in the same county remaining there until 1897, then moving with his son Fred H. with whom he has since made his home in Sunfield, Eaton County, Michigan. A generous hearted, obliging neighbor, he made a large circle of acquaintances and friends in each community, who held him in high esteem. He was a kind loving father and when his companion died, devoted his life to rearing the little boys Providence had left to his care. With no premonition he was summoned from comparatively good health in an instant to be with his maker. Like ripened corn he was ready for the sickle. He now has realized the fruition of his faith and gone to meet the loved ones who went before whose companionship here meant so much to him. He will be missed much here through the parting is not for long. He was buried from the home in the Sunfield cemetery, Wednesday p.m. April 20th. The service was conducted by Rev. A. Hoffman, pastor of the U. B. church of Woodland, Michigan. A large company of his former friends gathered to pay this tribute to his memory. CARD OF THANKS We wish to extend our heart felt thanks to the neighbors and friends for their assistance and sympathy during the death and burial of our father and especially to thank the choir and those who sent flowers.
