Canaan CAME TO VERMONTVILLE FOR HIS BRIDE The poet who wrote, "What is so rare as a day in June?" certainly never had the pleasure of beholding a June bride or he would have found an immediate answer to his query. The spacious home of Mr. and Mrs Albert Curtis Pope south of town was a bower of bloom on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter, Flora Alberta to Mr. Stewart E. Canaan of Big Rapids on Tuesday evening, June 30th. Friends and relatives to the number of nearly a hundred were gathered in the parlors at the appointed hour, six o'clock, to witness the ceremony. The arrangements were perfect in every detail. When the bridal party descended the stairs the sweet strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march, played by Miss E. Grace Hawkins, floated out upon the evening breezes. First came six young lady friends as ushers, Misses Margarette McCarty, Pearl Hawkins, Mae Sprague, Lura Downing, Edith Martin and Bertha Pope; the groom, unattended, owing to his brother having received a painful accident the day before which prevented his being present; the bridesmaid, Miss Antoinette Pope a sister of the bride, followed by the bride leaning upon the arm of her father. The ring ceremony was performed by Rev. C. F. Wheeler of Bellevue. Following the ceremony came the congratulations after which all sat down to a bountiful wedding supper. The house was artistically decorated with field daises and ferns. A corner of the parlor was banked with ferns in front of, which dropped rope portieres made of daisies making the place where the ceremony was to take place. After supper the happy couple left on the train west for their own home in Big Rapids which was ready for their occupancy where the groom is a partner with his brother in the grocery business. Several saw that the couple were properly introduced to the passengers on the train and a liberal supply of rice and flowers were strewn upon the travelers. The bride wore a beautiful gown of Paris Lawn over white silk and a veil, while the bridesmaid wore blue silk mull. Those in attendance from away were Mrs Frederick II. Sheldon and son, Matillja, California, Mrs Eliza Knapp, Indianapolis, Indiana, P. H. Pope, Jackson, Mrs Antoinette Pope, Springport, Mrs Laura Merritt, Hillsdale, Mr and Mrs P. A. Hults and Miss Bertha Pope of Charlotte, Mrs H. H. Warren, Detroit, Mrs Harriet Devering, Tekonsha. The presents were numerous and beautiful. Their many friends in Vermontville extend their best wishes and hopes of a long and happy life in their home.
