When we take into consideration the fact that according to a recent writer’s estimate, but one couple out of five thousand live to celebrate that number of years of married life, we can readily understand the interest manifested in an event of this kind. It was - strictly speaking - a family reunion, including only a few intimate friends of the family. All of the living children of this venerable couple were present, several of them having come from distant states to do homage to their aged and honored parents. Grandpa Schlappi will be 83 years of age June 4th, and grandma Schlappi will be 78 March 4th. There have been born to this couple twelve children, seven of whom are now living. They have twelve living grand children. The living children commencing with Ezra Schlappi of Petoskey and in order named as to age are as follows: Mrs. C. H. Wilbur, living on the Lansing road, four miles from Eaton Rapids; Mrs. F. H. Huntley, wife of Prof. Huntley of Eaton Rapids; S.O. Schlappi of Kansas City, Mo.; A. L. Schlappi of West Superior, Wis.; C.R. Schlappi of Sheridan, Wyoming, and W. E. Schlappi of Kansas City, Mo. A photograph in the possession of the family, includes four generations in one group, including grandma Schlappi, Mrs. C.H. Wilbur, daughter of grandma Schlappi; Nina G. Olmstead, a grand-daughter, and daughter of Mrs. C.H. Wilbur and Hazel Olmstead, great grand-daughter of grandma Schlappi, and daughter of Nina Olmstead. Immediate relatives of the family present, included Wm. Olmstead, wife and family, Prof. Huntley and Mrs. Ezra Schlappi. Rev. Mr., Davis, pastor of the United Brethren Church, and wife and Rev. Mr. Mowers, and wife, old time friends of the family were present. A cake on which appeared the significant numerals “1840 and 1900,” was served and a good old fashioned dinner was enjoyed by all present. Appropriate remarks were made by the Rev. Mr. Mowers, eulogizing this grand old couple who had been so many years, staunch and faithful workers in the good cause remarking, among other things, that the world was better for their having been in it.”
